Switching from TypeIt4Me to TypeSnap

Moving from TypeIt4Me? TypeSnap imports your snippets directly. Here's the complete migration guide.

TypeIt4Me is solid software, and if it’s been working for you, that’s a fair reason to stick with it. But if you’re looking for a more modern interface, broader macro support, or the ability to import from TextExpander down the road, TypeSnap is the natural next step. Your existing TypeIt4Me snippets — including groups, fill-in fields, and date macros — transfer cleanly with no manual rekeying.

What Transfers

Here’s what comes over from TypeIt4Me:

  • All snippets and their content
  • Groups (clipping sets), preserved as TypeSnap groups
  • Fill-in fields
  • Date and time macros
  • Cursor positioning

What changes: TypeIt4Me uses its own macro syntax that TypeSnap converts automatically. For example, <cursor> or <|> becomes {{cursor}}, and <date> becomes {{date}}. The import preview shows exactly what was changed.

Step 1: Export from TypeIt4Me

  1. Open TypeIt4Me
  2. Click FileExport Clippings…
  3. Choose a location and save the file
  4. TypeIt4Me saves your export as a .typeit4me file (you can also export as .csv if you prefer)

This exports all your clippings and sets in one file.

Step 2: Import into TypeSnap

  1. Open TypeSnap
  2. Click FileImportFrom TypeIt4Me
  3. Drag your export file into the window (or click to browse)
  4. Review the import preview:
    • Green ✓ = Ready to import as-is
    • Yellow ⚠️ = Imported with changes (macro was converted)
    • Red ✗ = Cannot import automatically (needs manual review)
  5. Click Import

Your clippings are now in TypeSnap as snippets.

Macro Conversion Reference

TypeIt4Me TypeSnap What it does
<cursor> or <|> {{cursor}} Cursor position after expansion
<date> {{date}} Current date
<time> {{time}} Current time
<fill:name> {{input:name}} Fill-in field
<popup:a,b,c> {{select:a,b,c}} Dropdown selection

All of these convert automatically during import. You’ll see a yellow indicator in the preview for any snippet that contained a converted macro.

FAQ

Does TypeSnap import multiple TypeIt4Me groups?

Yes — groups (clipping sets) are fully preserved. If you had your snippets organized into sets in TypeIt4Me, those same groups will appear as TypeSnap groups in the sidebar after import. The structure carries over exactly, and you can reorganize or rename the groups once the import is complete.

What about TypeIt4Me’s strftime formatting?

TypeIt4Me supports strftime-style date formatting (like %Y-%m-%d). TypeSnap converts this automatically to its own date format syntax during import. For example, TypeIt4Me’s <date> maps to TypeSnap’s {{date:MMMM d, yyyy}}, and strftime patterns inside ⊢...⊣ delimiters are automatically converted. You don’t need to update anything manually — the conversion is handled for you.
