Privacy-First Text Expansion: Why It Matters

Think about what’s in your text snippets: client email templates, addresses, code patterns, contract language, and support replies. A snippet library can contain sensitive information. Where it is stored matters.

Start with Local Storage

TypeSnap stores your snippet library on your Mac in ~/Library/Application Support/TypeSnap/. Expansion runs locally: matching an abbreviation and inserting a reply does not require sending that reply to a server.

The library is stored in JSON files. Local storage gives you control over backups and exports, but it is not a substitute for protecting your Mac. Review FileVault, device access, and backup settings if your snippets contain sensitive information.

Sync Is a Choice

iCloud sync is off by default. If you enable it, snippet data is sent to your private CloudKit database under your Apple account so it can sync between your Macs. It is not a team-sharing service or an iCloud Drive folder.

Cloud sync can be useful. Before turning it on, check whether your employer or client permits that content to be stored in iCloud. The same applies when exporting your library or sending an export to someone else.

Know What the App Keeps

TypeSnap processes a short typing buffer locally to detect triggers. It excludes secure password fields by default, although a setting can override that protection.

Clipboard history is on by default. It keeps up to 50 copied-text entries locally, encrypted on your Mac. You can turn it off in Preferences. Usage counts and estimated savings also stay local. The app contains no in-app analytics or third-party crash-reporting SDK.

Network Services Still Exist

Local expansion does not mean the app never uses the network. Keybee handles license activation, recurring validation, and deactivation. Licensing requests send the key, product identifier, and a hardware-derived device fingerprint; activation also sends the computer name. Sparkle checks the update feed and downloads releases. Neither of these requests includes your snippet library or typing buffer.

Purchases use Stripe checkout. This website uses Abner for anonymous traffic statistics and loads Google Fonts. Those website services are separate from the app’s local usage statistics.

The privacy policy explains these data flows and how to contact us. It is more useful than a blanket claim that no data is ever collected.
